“How Did This Happen”

In this paper, the student shall provide complete and thoughtful answers to the following

question/instructions below:

Think of the historical events that have been learned/ discussed in class regarding slavery/ African Americans, Chinese and Japanese immigrants, Native Americans and other groups of peoples that experience discrimination:

  • When did you first learn of these historical events in American history (How old were you/ what grade in school)?
  • What were your feelings at the time when you learned of the experience of these groups of people?

Now that you have reflected about you and your family, answer the following questions pertaining to the society in which we live:

  • How have historical events created and perpetuated our continued issues of racism, sexism, stereotypes and discrimination of men and women of color?
  • Do you believe racism, etc., is experienced in other countries/ cultures around the world? Please give 2 examples.
  • What do you believe is the reason behind the “need” for some groups to discriminate against others groups? Why?
  • How will knowing the history of the treatment of various groups of people within our society help create systems for change? Explain.

This writing assignment shall be 6-10 pages in length. You will be required to cite a minimum of 8 sources: 6 of which must come from the assigned text(s). It shall be typed, double-spaced, and have one-inch margins and printed single sided. Student must use Times New Roman font (typeface), size shall be 12 point.

Paper must include a cover page which includes your name, the term and year, the name of the course, name of the assignment, name of the instructor.
