Wangari Maathai, “Unbowed”: Essay (200 pts)

Wangari Muta Maathai was born in Kenya in 1940, into the Kikuyu ethnic group. She was not born into a privileged family, but her father was employed by a white English farmer, her mother grew food in the traditional Kikuyu fashion, and her family was interested in providing their children with an education. In 2004 Maathai was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of her environmental activism within Kenya. We will read the entire book for this course.

Among the most important issues raised by this book, and by the Nobel Prize Committee’s selection of Maathai for the Peace Prize in 2004, is the relationship between environmental issues and peace. What evidence does Maathai present in this memoir that environmental concerns and peace/violence issues are related to one another? How did Maathai’s interest in environmental issues guide her towards political activism? What relationship does she see between political corruption and environmental negligence and degradation?

Finally, how did the various intercultural and cross-cultural experiences of her life contribute to her views on environmental issues in relation to good governance? In what ways did she apply specific aspects of multi-cultural and international experiences in her environmental and political activism?
