week 8 discussion and 2 comments and assignment engl 281

Week 8, Discussion 8.1: Major Sentence Structure Errors

Write a paragraph in which at least one of each of the three types of major sentence structure errors appears:

  • fragment
  • run-on sentence
  • comma splice

Write a second paragraph showing the three (or more) errors corrected.

Following this paragraph, provide an overview of at least 100 words stating what you have learned through this exercise.

Finally, consider the content of the whole course and how it has helped to improve your writing, both grammatically and stylistically. Specify terms, concepts, techniques, and forms/formatting learned.

Do not reference outside sources; use language entirely your own, please.

Once your paragraphs have been posted, read classmates’ posts and respond to comment on differences you have noted between their posts and your own. Assignment:

Assignment 3: Academic Planning and Reflexive Activity

Hide Assignment Information

The final project is composed of two parts:

The first part of the Final Project is a plan (using the template provided) outlining your academic path in three categories:

  • courses already completed
  • courses planned
  • semester in which each of these courses has been taken or will be taken

This plan will depict the schedule by which you will complete required courses and choose electives for a degree in the English program. If you are not an English major, you will prepare a list of courses taken and planned for your major in a document or spreadsheet (not using the template provided). If you completed PACE 111 here at UMGC, then you have have done a similar exercise in planning. However, it is always useful to revisit your plan and treat it as a “living” document.

The second part of the Final Project is a formal expository essay (3-4 pages, 750-1000 words) addressing the following topics:

  • What you have learned from ENGL 281 that will help you advance academically and professionally
  • Why do you think this course is required for the ENGL program (Or, why did you opt to take it if you are not pursuing an ENGL major or minor)
  • Why did you choose/take the electives that you did
  • What your future goals are and how you might apply the skills you are learning in ENGL courses towards achieving those goals

This assignment also allows you not only to exhibit correct grammar in your writing but also to bring in elements of style (as discussed in Week 8). A conscious writer works at multiple levels when constructing a piece of writing: moving from sentence to sentence to keep the reader engaged with the entirety of the writing.

Format the paper in the MLA. If you use outside resources, they should be documented both within the paper and on a Works Cited page. For assistance with MLA formatting, see https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/research_and_citation/mla_style/mla_formatting_and_style_guide/mla_formatting_and_style_guide.html

This assignment is due by the end of the eighth week of class on Sunday by 11:30 PM ET.
