paper on Revolution – Fidel Castro

“Al que asome la cabeza, duro con él.
Fidel, duro con él.”
“Whomever reveals himself, hit him hard.
Fidel, hit him hard.”

Carlos Puebla, “Duro Con El” (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MGyr-D88vR4)
Carlos Puebla’s song “Duro Con El” is one of the Cuban Revolution’s most famous songs and, to my mind, one of its most revealing. It’s the sort of song that is a call to arms against the enemies of the revolution, in support of Fidel Castro’s leadership, and an artistic encapsulation of what Alma Guillermoprieto points to as the Cuban Revolution’s almost life-or-death dependence on El Comandante.
Guillermoprieto has written a review of three books that cover Fidel’s personal life and his leadership style. The review is a fascinating and sobering analysis of Cuba’s long-time leader and I’m wondering what you make of her analysis. How does her account square with the Fidel Castro you knew? Was he someone familiar to you? Did you have a positive view of him? Has Guillermoprieto’s review changed the way you view him or reinforced what you already understood about the late Cuban leaders?
I’m looking forward to reading your responses.
