  • Love and Kindness

Love and kindness are two important character strengths of humanity. Love occurs in reciprocal relationships, whereas kindness can be shown to anyone whether or not they are kind in return. The research of John Gottman (as cited in Lopez, Pedrotti, & Snyder, 2015, pp. 341–344) reveals the need for appreciation, a form of kindness, in order to sustain positive loving relationships.

    • What is the “magic ratio” defined by Gottman for sustaining a healthy relationship?
    • What types of positive interactions are you most comfortable providing in your relationships?
    • What types of positive interactions do you most appreciate from someone in a loving relationship?
    • Based on this information, what steps could you take to increase your chances for flourishing relationships?

    Social and Emotional Intelligence

We have all been told the value “knowing yourself” or “walking a mile in his or her shoes” in order to know another. These phrases underlie the concept of emotional intelligence (as cited in Lopez, Pedrotti, & Snyder, 2015, pp. 162–168) and social intelligence from the VIA Survey and the Peterson and Seligman (2004) text.

    • From the standpoint of well-being and living a flourishing life, why is it important for us to develop our emotional or social intelligence?
    • Based on Salovey and Mayer’s Four-Branch Ability Model of Emotional Intelligence (as cited in Lopez, Pedrotti & Snyder, 2015, p. 164), which branch(es) do you feel strongest in ability, and why?
    • How could focusing on developing your branches of emotional intelligence increase your well-being and flourishing in your life? Give examples.
