Instructions:

Read this entire document carefully before you begin work on it. Next open a new Microsoft Word document. Number each of your responses 1-10 in the order you see each question below. Do not repeat the questions before your responses but DO WRITE IN COMPLETE SENTENCES. Any response not written using complete sentences and or incomplete/partial answers will only receive partial (½ credit)

For numbers 1-3, first click on the link below (or cut and paste it in a new browser window) to open the Wayne County Community College Handbook at http://www.wcccd.edu/students/pdfs/studenthandbook.pdf and once there, scroll down to what the PDF window says are pp 43-44 (pp 41-42 if you are looking at the page numbers in the PDF document). You are looking for the three terms identified in numbers 1-3 below. For each of the terms, paraphrase (repeat ideas in your own words) the college’s policy in the WCCCD Student Handbook. Number each of your responses in the order you see them below and write in complete sentences. Numbers 1-3 are worth up to 10 points each.

NOTE: If you directly quote from the handbook (repeat the definitions from the handbook using the same words in the handbook), do not fully paraphrase the ideas associated in each of these three terms (leave out essential parts of the term’s meaning), give sparse (poorly developed responses), or simply change a few words around but essentially repeat the definitions as written in the handbook—(it will be a judgment call—made by me), you risk losing up to half the points possible (5 each) for numbers 1-3.

Questions 4-10 are tied to the Steps to Writing Well with Additional Readings textbook (Chapter 20). Number your responses in the order they appear below and write each of your answers using complete sentences. You do not need to repeat the questions ahead of your answers but must write in complete sentences.

4. If you are internally citing (using a source by) one author that has page numbers, where do you place the author’s name and page number? (10 points)

5. When you internally cite, does an internal citation appear before or after the end punctuation in the sentence? (10 Points)

6. When both the author’s name (source) and the page number appear together in the parenthesis, is there any punctuation between the author’s name (source) and the page number? (10 Points)

7. If you are citing a source with only one author and give credit to that author by name (i.e., include the source as part of your sentence), and there are page numbers for the source, how do you account for the page numbers in your work? (10 Points)

8. For electronic sources, how do you treat (internally cite) ideas borrowed from such a source? (10 Points)

9. When dealing with what kind of source is it appropriate to include paragraph “par” or “screen” references in an internal citation? (10 Points)

10. For this question, you need to create actual work(s) cited entries, exactly as the requested entries would appear on a Work(s) Cited page. I am looking for actual MLA Work Cited page entries (bibliographic information that follow the last page of an academic assignment)—exactly as they would appear on a Work(s) Cited page, for the following sources: 1) A printed book with one author. You may use ANY printed book having only one author but MAY NOT use the example found on page 434 of the textbook. And 2) a work cited entry for the WCCCD Student Handbook referred to in Questions 1-3. Treat the handbook as a Professional Web Site. You are only creating one work cited page but make sure you include the label which normally appears at the top of any MLA formatted work cited page, ahead of the two work cited entries I have requested above. Also, make sure your work cited entries are arranged in the proper order—as each would appear on an actual work cited page. (10 Points)
