Social Impact of Population Growth

The United Nations has hired you to be a consultant on global issues. One of the challenges is assessing the impact of population growth. There is no question that the world population will grow dramatically in the next decade throughout many countries of the world. The members of the UN are working to understand the impact that population growth has on society, specifically in developing countries. Your first project with the UN is to develop a whitepaper on three issues related to the population growth faced by one of these countries. Read the Case Study and provide an assessment based on the questions below.

(For a brief list of resources for this assignment, please see the end of the course guide.)

II.Overview

Our obsession with continual economic growth deters us from studying the role that an expanding population plays in global warming.[1]

About 3 billion years ago, the Earth suffered through a mass extinction caused by catastrophic volcanic activity in Siberia and wildfires that covered the entire planet. Since then, four more extinctions have eradicated up to 80% of all species each time. The world’s climatologists and scientists overwhelmingly agree that we are now on the verge of a sixth mass event that, over the next few tens of thousands of years, will wipe out nearly all living species on Earth — including humankind.

This is not the stuff of science fiction or speculation, but rather the studied view of the people who are most qualified to make this kind of assessment. As anthropologist Richard Leaky, author of The Sixth Extinction,[2] wrote in 1995, “Homo sapiens might not only be the agent of the sixth extinction, but also risks being one of its victims.”

This brings us to two issues worthy of reflection:

Does the rate at which people are reproducing need to be controlled to save the environment?

To what extent does human population growth impact global warming… and what can be done about it?[3]

The answer to the first is quite simply “yes,” but the solution to the second is more problematic. The damage humans are doing to their climate is ruining the atmosphere surrounding their planet. At the rate this damage is increasing, at some point in the future there will be no atmosphere left to protect life on Earth from the sun’s ultraviolet radiation. Compared to other planets in our solar system, Earth has mild temperatures, thanks largely to the protective gases of its atmosphere.

However, since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution (around 1775), those gases have become stuck in the atmosphere, causing heat radiating from the sun to reflect back to Earth (rather than exiting to space). The result is that oceans have become warmer and glaciers are melting, including parts of Antarctica. If we think of that continent as the stopper in a bottle, its melting away will release all the water it is holding back. This will raise sea levels to uncontrollable levels and flood coastal regions for miles inland.

The two main culprits for this warming trend are carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane. These gases, called greenhouse gases, are trapped by the Earth’s atmosphere and, in turn, heat up the entire planet. It is worth noting that warming oceans are killing off kelp beds throughout the Earth’s oceans and coastlines at a prodigious rate. Not only do hundreds of millions of people depend on the fish that thrive on this ecosystem, but kelp is a natural absorbent of CO2. It purifies both the water around the kelp and the air we breathe.

Population growth that consumes natural resources is partially to blame for the release of greenhouse gases, as are deforestation, soil erosion, and farming (overturned dirt releases CO2). The real issue, however, is the burning of fossil fuels (hydrocarbons) such as coal oil and natural gas, which have been produced by the organic remains of prehistoric organisms. The release of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) such as refrigerants (used to cool the air in air conditioners and refrigerators), propellants in aerosol sprays, and solvents also contribute heavily to the depletion of the ozone layer in the Earth’s stratosphere. The stratosphere is responsible for filtering out much of the sun’s ultraviolet radiation, preventing humans from burning to death.

Continuing to release these gases and CFCs into the atmosphere at these rates will have catastrophic effects on the Earth’s ecosystems and its level of biodiversity. Temperatures will warm by about two degrees Fahrenheit, changing weather patterns for the worse across the globe. In December 2017, the World Bank stated, “Climate change is an acute threat to global development and efforts to end poverty. Without urgent action, climate impacts could push an additional 100 million people into poverty by 2030.”[4]

II.Case Assessment

The world’s population is expanding at such a rate that some natural resources are being stripped from the environment. This case study deals with how global institutions are working to prevent the loss of these resources. It also deals with, in effect, the consequences of not having access to these resources.

As the first section of your whitepaper for the UN, research the impact of population growth on society. Write a minimum of four pages assessing the impact, citing at least five credible sources in your research. As you compose the whitepaper, review the United Nations list of developing countries (available on the United Nations website). Select one country from the UN developing countries list to use as an example throughout your assessment. Please include:

  • A cover page with your name, title of course, date, and the name of your instructor
  • A one-half page introduction
  • A middle section that is numbered and divided into three one-page sections. Each of these sections should answer one of the following questions:
  1. What are greenhouse gases? How do they contribute to global warming?
  2. What kinds of economic, security, political, and other challenges do these emissions pose to the people of the developing world, and who are the biggest offenders?
  3. Is there any way to control the growth of population on a global level?
  • A one-half page conclusion
  • Cite at least five credible sources, excluding Wikipedia, dictionaries and encyclopedias for your assessment.
  • For a brief list of resources for this assignment, please see the end of the course guide.

This course requires use of new Strayer Writing Standards (SWS). The format is different than other Strayer University courses. Please take a moment to review the SWS documentation for details. (Note: You will be prompted to enter your Blackboard login credentials to view these standards.)

The specific course learning outcomes associated with this assignment are:

  • Evaluate the impacts of population growth and its negative impacts on global societies while considering multiple perspectives.

Forming questions based on critical reading

Prepare: Prior to beginning your initial post, read the handout, How to Ask an Open-Ended Question. In addition, review your initial response to the Clugston (2014) quote from Week One: “There’s a powerful curiosity about human relationships and how to cope in the world in which we find ourselves.” (Section 1.1, para. 2).

Reflect Icon

Reflect: In this discussion, you will reflect on what you learned in the course by practicing the skill of asking an open ended academic question. This exercise will allow you to engage in a discussion you create with your peers. It also helps you to ask your own questions about literature, which can serve as a gateway to initiating critical analysis. Think of an open-ended question about literature that you would like to ask in order to challenge your classmates to reflect more deeply. Also, reflect on your initial response to the Clugston quote. How have your feelings about literature changed or remained the same?

Write Icon

Write: Your initial post should be at least 200 words in length. The minimum word count does not include references.

  • Construct an open-ended question (see How to Ask an Open-Ended Question handout) to ask your peers about the literature you read in the class. Avoid asking closed-end questions that require a “yes” or “no” answer. The question should not be overly broad or too general, but focus on specific literary conflicts, techniques, or themes.
  • Share what you learned by reading your peers’ posts throughout the class.
  • Discuss your initial response to the Clugston (2014) quote from Week One. Based on what you learned about literature, what has changed? How will these changes impact your perspective on literature?

Business Ethics.

These films come from many genres, including comedy. Many should be available in our library.Others should be available on Netflix, Amazon Prime, Google Play, etc. Renting of some of them may be the only incidental cost of this class.Your job is to watch them – and then find a way to review them (two pages double-spaced for each review) that shows you’re seeing the ethical problems shown in the films. It should be partly fun – and partly serious education. Not all the suggested questions will be relevant to every movie in that category – and are provided only as suggestions to get you started.

Write a two page paper on any of these films. You can pick ANY one of the listed films and make sure to answer the questions and show the ethical problems shown in the films. It is a business ethics class. I will post the questions and movie choices below.

Questions:

1)What factors, other than money, are playing a role in employees’ behavior?

2) what real world parallels have you observed, in which unhappy employees might make or break (eventually) a business?

Movie choices:

Amarcord, Clerks*;Do the Right Thing*; The Aquatic Life of Steve Zissou; The Big Kahuna; Wall Street (1987); Z Channel; Syriana

Revise Analytical Report

Below is the instruction of the report. The report is almost finish but there are still some requirement that need to meet. I will provide the example of my professor in order for you to have an idea.

These are the requirement that still missing:

1. The conclusion or results of the entire report is prefaced near the end of the executive summary. Here the example: ” In conclusion, based on the following report, potential disadvantages of the policy outweigh the advantages. The unlimited vacation policy is better in theory than in practice. Work schedule flexibility can be embraced without the policy. Based on the research, I would advise LinkedIn Inc. to refrain from implementing the unlimited vacation policy”

2. There are a lot of repeating sentences: Therefore, the purpose of this analytical report is to highlight the benefits of adopting a new employee dress code

3. We need the recommendation after the conclusion paragraph in executive summary. Summary of the entire report of what we think that the company need to change.

Example: There are many other alternatives that LinkedInc can use to encourage it employees to take time off from work.

Set a mandatory minimum of accrued vacation days per year.

Give employees incentives to go on vacation or take days off.

Set up a flexible working policy so that it would be easier for employees to manage work and their

personal life.

4. The Introduction can look similar to the previous outlined in the work plan, The Introduction need to include: Purpose of the scope, Background, Sources and Methods, Scope, Report Organization. Each of the section contain from 3-4 sentences.

Example: PURPOSE OF THE REPORT: to determine and analyze the pros and the cons of adopting the unlimited vacation policy. The report presents research on the topic with well-supported recommendations in regards to the policy.

BACKGROUND: The CEO of LinkedIn Inc. has stated that his employees would be more productive and engaged when they have a better work and personal life balance. Certain members on the board of directors and the CEO believe that an unlimited vacation policy will encourage many employees to take time off from work, while others believe it would be detrimental to both the company and its employees.

SOURCES AND METHODS: the report includes information obtained from professional databases and publications (with citations). Research came mostly from secondary sources, with one primary interview source.

SCOPE: because the idea of unlimited vacation is relatively new and untested, the report will present well-supported arguments for and against the policy implementation in LinkedIn Inc.

REPORT ORGANIZATION: first, the report states the advantages and disadvantages of the unlimited vacation plan. Later, based on the findings, it presents a well-supported conclusion and recommendations that LinkedIn Inc. can use to encourage its employees to take time off from work.

Follow by the Body Paragraph, you need to separate the body in to two categories and titled them.

Example:

ADVANTAGES OF AN UNLIMITED VACATION POLICY:

LinkedIn Inc. could eliminate the administrative burden of keeping track of accrued vacationtime for individual employees.

An unlimited vacation policy makes tracking vacation time easier. Also, the company will eliminate large payouts when people quit. Employees will be accountable and responsible for managing their workload and vacation.

  • The policy will give employees more freedom and flexibility in their work schedule.

An unlimited vacation policy gives employees flexible hours to manage a work schedule and their lives. Because of this new policy, employees would not have to worry whether they have sufficient accrued vacation to cover unexpected absences. Statistics also suggest that committed employees will often work while on vacation anyways. According to a recent study, while on vacation, one in five employees have been contacted by their boss and around 61 percent of Americans worked while they were on vacation (Fottrell, 2014).

DISADVANTAGES OF AN UNLIMITED VACATION POLICY:

  • An unlimited vacation policy might actually result in employees taking fewer days ofvacation. In a competitive atmosphere, it would be hard for employees to take vacation days without any guidelines. Unlimited vacation may turn into “limited” vacation when some employees start feeling guilty about taking too much time off from work. Employees need specific guidelines to policies. In fact, companies that have implemented unlimited vacation policy have adapted specific incentives and features to their policies. For example, Evernote offers $1,000 to an employee who takes a full week off to go on vacation, while “staycations” do not qualify for this compensation. Ironically, the CEO of the company, Phil Libin, doesn’t lead by example since he hasn’t taken vacation in years (Weber, 2013).

According to Lotte Bailyn, a professor at the MIT Sloan School of Management, employees may end up taking less time off with an unlimited vacation policy because without a structure and guidelines, many workers will be less comfortable with taking vacations. Employees tend to rely on standards in regards to how much time off is appropriate (Kaufman, 2014).

  • Employees offered unlimited vacation may be the least likely to use it.

Without incentives and encouragement to go on vacation, the driven employees of LinkedIn Inc. will find reasons not to take time off from work. According to David DeLong, there’s a certain A-type personality prevalent among many jobs with limitless holidays, so employees need incentives and upper management examples to take time off from work (Weber, 2013).

5. You need to include at least two visual in the body, which would be cited and explained. Make sure the the visuals are relevant and supplementary without dominating the report (overuse of charts and diagrams)

6. In the Recommendation section, whatever outlined you state in the executive summary. You need to state it again and explain it. Example:

Set a mandatory minimum of accrued vacation days per year

Limiting the number of accumulated vacation days per year will compel employees to take days off. According to Figure 1, there are people who continue to take less than 5 days of vacation even after 20 years of employment. Setting a limit would discourage employees from working many years without taking a break.

Give employees incentives to go on vacation or take days off :In addition to setting a limit on the amount of accrued vacation time, the company should also provide incentives for taking time off. By doing so, LinkedIn Inc. will demonstrate that it values its employees and cares about their long-term well-being.

Set up a transparent and flexible working policy: A 2003 study that surveyed professional and technical workers found that the presence of formal or informal flexibility policies was associated with higher productivity. According to the report, employees value flexibility (Mochari, 2014). LinkedIn Inc. does not have to change vacation policy to allow its employees to manage a more flexible work schedule. For example, important meetings should not be scheduled before 9 a.m. and employees should not be expected to be at work after 6 p.m.

7. Each citation in your reference list should correspond to an in-text citation. Indent from the 2nd line thereafter ( even if it’s part of the URL)

8. Need to list out the advantages of adopting a new dress code.

Assignment 2: Custody Evaluation

Forensic professionals are often called upon to provide opinions about custody in cases of divorce, parental termination, and reestablishment of custody after a child has been removed from the custodial parent’s home. Specific ethical and legal parameters govern when and how a professional should offer such an opinion in a legal setting. For this assignment, you will be asked to provide an analysis of factors relevant to custody evaluations or evaluations for termination of parental rights.

Tasks:

In a 3- to 4-page paper, address the following:

  • The best interests of the child, with a specific focus on how this is defined in the APA guidelines
  • The manner in which the best-interest decisions are influenced by the wishes of the child
  • The difference between a fact and an expert witness in the cases of child custody
  • The specific procedures, including parent interviews, child interviews, observations, and objective tests, used in custody evaluations
  • The issues surrounding confidentiality, privilege, and privacy in custody evaluations
  • The court testimony in custody evaluations, with emphasis on the collective use of data and opinion versus fact in reporting the results

Use three additional resources from professional literature to support your response. Professional literature may include relevant textbooks, peer-reviewed journal articles, and websites created by professional organizations, agencies, or institutions (.edu, .org, and .gov).

Submission Details:

  • Save your paper as M4_A2_Lastname_Firstname.doc. By the due date assigned, post it to the Submissions Area.

Building a Sustainable Future

While a video essay benefits from the affordances of its multimodality, it is still an essay. This means that it must be argument-driven, and structured to prove its thesis. The evidence you use to achieve this goal can include audio, images, video, and narration. Your video essay must:

  1. Be 4-5 minutes long. You will convert this video into a YouTube or Vimeo link.
  2. Incorporate research. This includes primary science fiction sources but also academic and popular press research on your challenge.
  3. Include narration from all group members.
  4. Analyze how science fiction responds to and offers solution to your group’s Urban Sustainability Challenge.

900-1000 words

Instructions: Please carefully read the following assignment details in its entirety. There are many components to this particular assignment, and each component is graded. Do Not use your forum draft as your final submission. It is expected that you will revise this draft substantially- not only from the feedback you receive from peers –but also from your own informed and evolving ideas on the structure and purpose of the Toulmin argument.

Prof. Ho’s Easy Toulmin Structure

Thesis: Global Warming is a hoax because Reason1, Reason 2 and Reason 3.

para 2: Reason 1

Para 3: Reason 2

Para 4: Reason 3

Para 5: Counterargument paragraph–argue the other side.

Para 6: Rebuttal paragraph–rebut your side point by point.

Para 7: Conclusion

This essay should be between 900 and 1000 words, excluding the required annotated bibliography.

The Toulmin essay will help you practice what you have learned so far in this course. First, you will choose a topic of interest. Make sure that you choose a topic with two opposing sides. Then, you need to research that topic in order to specify the topic’s scope, so it can be easily discussed in 1000 word essay. For example, you may be interested in learning more about traffic issues in the United States. However, that topic is too large to cover in a 1000 word essay. After researching peer reviewed articles that discuss US traffic issues in general, you may discover that the metro system in the District of Columbia is underfunded and underutilized. Through your research, you found that you could make a claim that more funds should be made available in order to upgrade the metro system, which would improve traffic issues in the District of Columbia. This would make for a stronger, specific argument.

This essay must include a minimum of five sources. Three should be peer-reviewed sources, preferably from the APUS databases. From the library welcome page, click on Advanced Search at the bottom of the page and then check the “peer reviewed” sources box filter.

This video will hopefully clarify the term, “peer-reviewed”: http://youtu.be/rOCQZ7QnoN0. You may use eBooks; however, as discussed in your textbook, books generally are not as current as peer-reviewed articles. You may also use primary sources (interviews, statistics, etc); however, these primary sources should be obtained from experts within that field. If you cannot find strong sources for your chosen topic, then change your topic. If you have a question about the validity of a source, please email me, or post your question to the open forum.

Note: Consider your audience as laymen in the field with only general knowledge of your topic.

Make sure to include the following sections in your essay:

an introduction and claim,
background,
body,
and a conclusion.

Within the body of your essay, make sure to include the following in any order:

support for your claim,
opposing or alternate views,
the strengths and weaknesses of your opponents’ claims,
and your rebuttals of their claims.

After you have written your essay, please make sure to revise the content of your essay. Lastly, be sure to edit your essay by checking grammar, format, and smaller technical details. Please make sure your essay is written in third person.

The Annotated Bibliography

An annotated Bibliography (AB) is due with your Toulmin essay. Using the MLA guide, list each source as it will appear on the Works Cited page of your essay. Summarize each source in two or three grammatically-correct sentences. These short summaries are the “annotations.”

The following is a sample of an “annotated bibliography.”

Annotated Bibliography (Centered)

Clark, Irene L. The Genre of Argument. Fort Worth, TX: Harcourt Brace, 1998. Print.

Clark’s textbook identifies the major steps to developing a well-researched and well-written argumentative essay. Professional essays are included in the text as models.

Ward, Russ. Logical Argument in the Research Paper. Fort Worth, TX: Harcourt Brace, 1997. Print.

Augmenting the steps to writing an argumentative research paper is information about proper documentation. The Toulmin System, an important aspect of a well-planned paper, should be studied carefully.

***The following overused topics may not be used in your essay: gun control, abortion, capital punishment, gay marriage, gays in the military, mandatory drug testing, euthanasia, childhood obesity, women in the military, diets (including the Paleo diet), workout regimens (including CrossFit), underage drinking, and the legalization of marijuana.***
