fermentation
2. Fermentation
Yeast are easy to grow and are important in two respects. For one, yeasts are used in biomedical research because despite being single-celled organisms, they serve as good models (believe it or not!) of basic human biology. For another, yeasts
are used every day in baking and fermentation (to produce alcoholic beverages). Given that there is widespread hunger around the world, is it possible to grow large batches of yeast and somehow use that as a food? Do not consider this question together with mixing yeast into flour and the like to make leavened bread. The question is: Can yeast, by itself, be a reasonable food source for people in need? Why or why not?
