Disability Culture Plunge Portfolio

For this assignment you are required to develop a portfolio that showcases your experience through a disability culture plunge (You can find a list of activity and event options on Blackboard). A culture plunge can be defined as exposure to a culture that is different from our own and in this class specifically, the culture of disability. For some of you, you may already identify as being familiar with disability culture. If so, you will need to explore an arena of disability culture that you are not as familiar with. For many of you though, this may be your first time interacting or being involved with the disability community, and we are very excited to read about your experience! It is normal for you to feel nervous, intimidated, and fearful about this assignment, but we hope that this assignment is a valuable and memorable experience that transcends beyond your time at SDSU.

The name of the organization I attended was The Arc of San Diego Group, which is located at 1280 Nolan Ave, Chula Vista, CA 91911. This culture plunge was done on October 6, 2018 from 8:30am- 12:00pm.

https://www.arc-sd.com, mmather@are-sd.com, 858-395-0734, Michael Mather was the person who helped us sign up for this even

I attended this event with two of my classmates Aylin Karoomi and Nirmeen Jabouri. We arrived at 8:30 am to the event. We attended three classes; at 9:00am we attended a music class. Victoria was the instructor for this class. She started her class with an opening song that was asking the attendees about what are they in the mood for. This song was very joyful and everyone was happy and excited to share his or her moods. After that she taught the class how to use the drums. Victoria also used her guitar and sang few songs such as ACB, over the rainbow and much more. This class was very interesting and everyone had so much fun singing and dancing. At 10:30 we attended an adaptive fitness class. Lovely M was the instructor for this class. She was very sweet with her students. In this class we did some yoga, pass the ball, people were able to use bikes and treadmill machines to get their activities done. The last class we attended was a Zumba class. This class was super fun and active. We danced and helped other people enjoy their time through dancing. There were different types of disabilities that were represented at the event some people with mental health conditions, intellectual disability, acquired brain injury, autism, and physical disability.

bartering counseling

Consider the video, Bartering:

The Architect, and Janice’s therapeutic relationship with you as the counselor. It is important that the counselor consider the ramifications of bartering before agreeing to an exchange. What looks like a gesture of good-will on the counselor’s part can easily boomerang and negate the gains you have made in therapy. Keep in mind some of the things that might go wrong and how his might affect your ability to provide therapy.

1. What ACA principles and standard (s) can you use to make a decision about whether to enter into a bartering relationship with Janice?

After you have deliberated on these issues you decide that bartering with Janice is workable. Consider, the following scenarios that may happened despite your best intentions.

2. For example, let us say that you were displeased with Janice’s plans. How would handle this situation in an ethical and therapeutically sensitive manner?

3. On the other hand, you might inadvertently take advantage of Janice. For example, if out of a desire to do an outstanding job for you, she goes well beyond the agreement you have her. How would handle this situation in an ethical and therapeutically sensitive manner?

2. Write a description of how of the psychological disorder and/or the therapy that was portrayed.

3. Write a critical analysis of how accurate or inaccurate you found the portrayal of the disorder/therapy. Show evidence of your knowledge of the psychological disorder/mental illness or the type of therapy

Course reflection and Replies

Course Reflection

Now that you have completed the course, take some time to consider what you have accomplished or struggled to accomplish. Reflect on the major concepts you studied in this course:

  • Understanding different types of psychological research methods.
  • Applying research methodology to design an ethically appropriate psychological research study.
  • Communicating effectively.

When addressing the main course concepts, complete the following:

  • Explain how your understanding of psychological literature has improved.
  • Indicate how you have applied one course concept in a workplace or personal situation.
  • Discuss in detail, with the use of an example, your most valuable lessons learned in this course.
  • Explain how what you have learned helped you in your overall course of study.

Here are two other classmates discussion that needs to be replied to by tonight

Hi Class,

Research has never been an interest of mine , however I really enjoyed this class. I enjoyed reading and interpreting research designs and studies. I never understood what it takes to create an actual research study . So I’m leaving this class with a wealth of knowledge. I learned a lot about the different methods of research such as quantitative , qualitative and experimental research . I have learned how to start a research proposal by integrating multiple components in an understanding and logical way . By creating a research problem, research question , hypothesis, collection techniques, data analyses and study outcomes and implications. Most importantly, I have learned to communicate more professionally when discussing research and its importance . I have learned how to communicate efficiently in my discussions and assignments . I have to say a big part of this is accepting the feedback from my instructor and peers. One of the biggest challenges in this course was understanding psychological literature. I am now leaving this class with a better understanding and a different point of view. I am now able to interpret psychological literature in my own words .

My current job is in an Orthopedic department and they are doing a major research project on ACL reconstructions. Since this course I have gained much more respect for the researchers. I have asked them many question and even offered my input and help on there project . I was surprised that I could understand there research, research problem and there study methods. My most valuable lesson from this course was the understanding of the validity and reliability of a research project . Understanding how much needs to be put in a research project for it to be successful and reliable. I desire to be a psychologist and look forward to futureresearch projects . I know research information can help implement new diagnoses or treatment and I would love to be a part of this.

Writing a Research Proposal

The most challenging part of my research project was the methodology section. Although my research did not involve collection of data from actual participants, there was a huge amount of data that was being collected through sources which was difficult to sift through. The existing data can be analyzed to generate new hypothesis or answer critical research questions. If I were to actually carry out the study, I would include more variables to manipulate. I would also investigate the biological perspective of criminal behavior, for instance genetic disposition. I would have to conduct research based on my topic, juvenile recidivism, because I have no affiliation with this topic other than interest. I can use research in my career to address the behavioral and social issues that affect the community.

Jermaine Salley

Journal entry non human technology

Ritzer argues that with McDonaldization, technologies, including “machines and tools, materials, skills, knowledge, rules, regulations, procedures, and techniques” (p. 89), control us.

Without using direct quotes, this assignment requires you to do the following:

  • Summarize Ritzer’s definition of control by non-human technologies, including a description of what he means by non-human technologies.
  • Next, think of one area of your life, such as your job, banking, your education, a leisure activity, etc and how that statement may apply to that activity as you experience it. NOTE: Do not choose one of the areas described in the textbook.
  • Based on your reflection, do you agree with Ritzer’s argument?
  • Do you feel that, as an employee, student, or customer, you are overly controlled by non-human technologies in this activity?

I have attached the instructions

Need Power Point Project on “The American Dream”

Need to present a power point project about “The American Dream” through the experiences related from Fitzgerald’s “Lost Generation” and “The Great Gatsby”. MUST HAVE AT LEAST TWO QUOTES OR EXAMPLES FROM BOTH AND CITED (AUTHOR, PAGE #). Also, need to reference the Puritans, Revolutionary writers, Civil War writers, or the Realists. Such as, Stephen Crane’s, “To the Maiden”, “I Will Fight No More Forever”, “The School Days of an Indian Girl”, “There was Crimson Clash of War”, “The Open Boat”, Mark Twain’s, “The Notorious Jumping Frog of Calaveras County” or Hamlin Garlind’s, “The Return of a Private”.
Please see attachment for more detailed instructions. NOTE: On the first question of Phase #3, you can answer or I can insert my personal vision later (I really don’t care) but would appreciate the help with the rest of the phase 3.
